Oprun developed AR-HUD backlight system
2019-07-30
The optical design team of Oprun-tech successfully developed the wide-angle FOV, AR-HUD backlight optical system. This backlight system can be customized and verified according to the needs of HUD front-loading customers, and can be used for viewing angles, projection angles and brightness requirements of different terminal models. The system consists of Micro-lens and collimated optical projection system with wide-area FOV, brightness uniformity >80%, low total light source power and high optical utilization. At present, Oprun-tech has cooperated with many domestic HUD modules and solution companies to develop and market in the front and rear loading markets.
HUD technology has been around for a long time. The first HUD system was developed for pilots in World War II. They asked for information to be "heads up" and displayed in a forward-looking position to help them hit the target while maneuvering. Modern HUDs became commonplace in military aircraft in the 1960s and commercial aircraft in the 1970s.
Older automotive-based HUD systems use small cathode ray tubes to project vehicle data onto special components on the windshield. The information is superimposed on the lower half of the glass, which is within the driver's direct line of sight. In order to understand the information more quickly, the data is displayed at the same focus as the focus of the road ahead of the vehicle. Therefore, the driver does not need to refocus his or her eyes to view the HUD information.
Recent advances in display technology have improved the design of HUD systems, many of which now utilize liquid crystal display (LCD) and light emitting diode (LED) technologies that deliver brighter images and are less expensive to manufacture. Newer projection technologies, including micro-mirror-based devices based on electromechanical DLP, are entering the market, creating brighter images and more saturated colors.
There are two main types of HUD systems in production or development: systems that utilize a complete windshield and combiner HUD. The former is mainly used in the front-loading market, and the latter is mainly used in the modification and installation market. The former requires a large space for integration with the vehicle system, and the latter is small in size and convenient for installation. From the effect point of view, it is obvious that the former system and hardware space can be guaranteed, and the latter's reflective media screen is not needed, and can be directly projected onto the front windshield, and the effect is better.
The HUD system typically consists of an image generation unit (PGU) that includes a heat sink, a printed circuit board, an LED matrix and a TFT color display and a light guide. Texas Instruments' TI DLP chipset has been used in film and home theater applications for many years and is being developed in some HUD systems. Ouyan Guangqing Technology is currently upgrading the existing AR-HUD and W-HUD backlight technologies, using optical systems consisting of microlenses and direct-lit backlighting technology to meet the market's higher requirements for brightness uniformity and angle.
